Film Review: 'Rithu'- Syamaprasad lost the core

After notable ‘OreKadal’ now Syamaprasad comes up with the new film ‘Rithu’. But unlike the older ones the new one lost its core. ‘Rithu’, as per the words of the director is a film which discusses the life of employers in IT field. But in fact the film converses a lot of messages-problems of employers in IT field, their love, changing of traditional culture to the modern, change in the communist policies, grief of people whom are displaced in the name of development etc, etc. And that makes the film a failure. Rithu tells the story of three friends –Sarath (Nishaan), Sunny (Asif Ali) and Varsha (Reema Kallingal). Once they were having fun in the lake shore and always enjoyed their life through numerous tricky plays. But at the same time they were troubled by their homely problems. They all have a lot of dreams but nothing works. At last these childhood friends decided to set apart in search for jobs. Sarath take off to America, Sunny and Varsha have got a job in Infosys at Bangalore. But after some years they decide to work together in a new IT company, when Sarath comes back. They joined in a new IT company in Kerala. Three years made notable changes in the lives of Sunny and Varsha. But Sarath is still a man who lives in the memories of older days. He loves Varsha. But Varsha maintains relations with a lot of guys. Slowly Sarath came to know that Varsha and Sunny changed a lot. Varsha is now finding relief in flirting and dating. Sunny is trying to get a visa to foreign. But Sarath wants to fulfill his earliest dreams.

As days passes Sarath felt that he had lost his friends. They all changed just like seasons. Now Sarath was in a move to write a novel. In fact his father persuaded him to select Computer Science for higher studies; his wish was to become a writer. After father’s death he starts to think about writing a book. His friends always gives enough material for the book, because Sarath writing his own story. Sarath’s brother was a communist but now he left all his ideologies. Sarath have an objection to that-saying that his brother is not changed but have gone himself from the system because of its faults. Just like his brother Sarath is also little bit concerned about the common people. He raised his voice against displacing people for development projects. At the end when Sunny and Varsha cheated him with their new ‘changed’ life Sarath realize that he was in an Allis’s wonderland. These all subjects are gathering together in the film but not move parallel. At the end point the viewer can’t be able to predict what the director wants to say about. This disorder makes the film a slight disturbance for viewers and also the director a failure.

Script of journalist Joshua Newton also troubles the film. To explain the speedy life of the new IT youngsters (as the director says) the script writer fails. Many of the long dialogues sometimes persuaded me to leave the theatre. Cinematography by Shyam Dutt and music by Rahul Raj is superb. The debutantes Nishaan, Asif performed well. We really felt the mannerisms and lifestyle of IT youngsters when watching these two actor’s performance. Syamaprasad also deserves a pat for molding them as his characters. Reema should improve him selves something more. But Iam sure she is not bad in the film.

The film which will hit the theatre on August 7th features lyrics by Rafeeque Ahamed, art-direction by Premachandran and editing by Vinod Sukumaran. Produced by Vachan Shetty ‘Rithu’ will be brought to the theatres by Actor Mammootty's distribution company ‘The Play House’.
