Kerala's secod Tiger reserve 'Parambikulam' inaugurated

Palakkad, 19th February 2010: Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Friday declared the Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary and its adjoining areas as a tiger reserve, at Aanamalai. Now it is the second Tiger reserve in Kerala after the Periyar and also the 38th in India. ''The National Tiger Conservation Authority(NTCA) will relocate and pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to 78 of the 250 families who have expressed willingness to move out of the core area of the Parambikulam tiger reserve'' Jairam ramesh said after the declaration. ''The next region to be declared as a tiger reserve is the Sahyadri reserve in Maharashtra.Of the 1 lakh families living in the core areas of all these reserves, 3,000 families have been relocated so far,” he added.The NTCA will sanction Rs 2 crore each for the management and maintenance of the Parambikulam and Periyar tiger reserves for 2010-11. In addition, the entire cost of relocating the inhabitants of the Pachakadam cardamom plantation in the Periyar reserve will be borne by the NTCA.He also said that of the 39 tiger reserves in the country, nine were in good condition, around 12 in satisfactory condition and 18 in very poor condition.However, the reserves in South India, like Mudumalai, Nagarhole, Nagarjunasagar and the reserves in Kerala, are not included in the list of the `reserves in poor condition’.
Jairam Ramesh expressed hope that the Budget to be presented by Finance Minister Thomas Isaac would be a ‘green budget’, with incentives for eco-restoration and livelihood security, thus setting a model for the rest of the country.
He also added that details of the bird census being conducted in Kerala will be released in the middle of April. This is the second census, with the first being the one conducted by ornithologist Salim Ali in 1933. The team which is conducting the latest census is following the same trail adopted by Salim Ali.
''Malabar wildlife sanctuary would be inaugurated on April 12'', he added. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom presided over the meet. Writer Sugathakumari in her address thanked Jairam Ramesh for not according clearance to the Athirappally hydel project.
