ASEAN; Details should hand over to Kerala

Newdelhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had assured Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan to hand over all details of ASEAN treaty to the state government. Manmohan also gave assurance that a representative of the state should be included in the sub-committee to solve the problems on the treaty-V S told here in a pressmeet. Kerala also express its bewilderment in implementing the treaty in the state and also insisted the Centre to reconsider the decision to sign the treaty. Agreement contained many sections which would have far-reaching consequences on the agricultural sector of the State.
Liberalized import would make rubber, tea, pepper and edible oil’s prices crash and lead to a direct drop in the income of farmers. The agreement in its present form would not provide the protection of even the negative list which was envisaged earlier-V S said.
The agreement provided for a regulated reduction in the duty of items imported from the ASEAN countries. The State’s agricultural economy and fisheries sector would be devastated if the Centre went ahead with the agreement.
V S also added that the Centre did not consider the views of the States which would be affected by such an agreement were a serious matter.
