Eight Students Drown in Chaliyar

Malappuram: On 4th Wednesday: Eight students of Sullamusallam Higher Secondary School,Moorkanad, drowned when a country boat ferrying them across the Chaliyar river at Moorkanad, Areekode in Malappuram district. The accident happened around 4.45 p.m. when the students were returning home from school. The victims were Plus One and Plus Two students in the 16-18 age group. The victims have been identified as Suhail, Shihab, Siraj, Shahidali, Shameem, Thaufiq, Mohammed Mufti and the girl Taiba.Eyewitness accounts said the boat was carrying 40 students. Sand-mining workers, other students and local people rescued the rest of the students who fell into the river. Many students swam to safety. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police officers are conducting search operations. A 15-member naval team has started from Kochi to help in the rescue efforts.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has directed the Malappuram Collector to submit an emergency report on the cause of the accident. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty and Education Minister M.A. Baby visited the spot later. On 5th Thursday State Human Rights Commission have taken a case in the light of media reports. Commission also asked a detailed report from the Malappuram Dist.Collector and Panchayath Secretary within one week.
Over weight is the reason:
Malappuram DRO on Thursday submitted the first hand report on the incident citing that the reason behind the mishap was overweight in the country boat. There were 40 students in the boat were it can't afford. Revenue minister K P Rajendran also directed all the District collectors to submit a detailed report on the 'Valla Kadavus' which are in dangerous situation.
