About Elly (Iran) and Fishing Platform (Indonasia) share Suvarna Chakoram-14th IFFK concludes with a colourful note



Thiruvananthapuram: The Iranian film, About Elly directed by Asghar Farhadi shared with Ravi Bharwani’s Fishing Platform the prestigeous Suvarna Chakoram, the Golden Crow Pheasant award, in the 14th International Film Festival of Kerala. True Noon, directed by Nosir Saidov got Rajata Chakoram, the Silver Crow Pheasant Award for the best director and Madoda Ncayiyana’s My Secret Sky received the Rajata Chakoram for the best debut director. True Noon also bagged Rajata Chakoram for the film voted by the audience.
The other awards are :
1. A Fly in Ashes by Argentinean filmmaker Gabriela David (FIPRESCI award for the best film) 2. Joshy Mathew’s Train in the Tenth Floor (FIPRESCI award for the best Malayalam film)
3. Fishing Platform by Ravi Bharwani (NETPAC award for the best Asian Film in competition section)
4. Kerala Cafe by Shyamaprasad (NETPAC award for the best Malayalam film)
5. Harishchandra’s Factory by Paresh Mokashi (Hassankutty Award for the best Indian debut director).
The awards were given away by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan.
The jury who decided the Suvarna-Rajata Chakoram awards was chaired by the famous Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi and the African film critic Balufu Bakupa- Kaninda, the dancer-actress Mamata Shankar, Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, Egyptian director Hala Khalil were the members. The NETPAC jury consisted Renhua Na, Fatemeh Motamedarya and Cheran. The FIPRESCI jury was Daniela Bisogni, H N Narahari Rao and Ibrahim Ouf. Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Mohan Agashe and Anjali Menon decided on Hassankutty Award, constituted by Mira Nair in memory of her assistant director Hassankutty.
Suvarna Chakoram carries a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs. Rajata Chakoram for the best director carries Rs. 3 lakhs while the best debut director gets Rs. 2 lakhs.

The award winning About Elly focuses on how the peace goes to pieces in a family after the fateful disappearance of a woman guest. The film was widely acclaimed for its technical and aesthetic perfection. The Indonesian film Fishing Platform depicts the motherless life of a 12 year old boy with a distanced father. True Noon beautifully portrays the changing life and conflicts in two villages when a State erected fence comes along between them. The Fipresci best film A Fly in Ashes revolves around the agony of two women trapped by sex mafia. Malyalam film Train in the Tenth Floor deals with schizophrenia diagnosed in a man who lost job in Indian railways. Kerala Café the Malayalam film is a combination 10 short films seen in different perspectives. The Marathi film Harishchandra’s Factory throws light into the agonies and ecstasies of creating the first Indian feature film ‘Raja HarishChandra’.
