Violence in Kasargod; two men dead


Kasargod: One person was killed in the police firing and another one was stabbed to death in an eruption of violence at Kasargod on Sunday 15th Naovember 2009. Several people were injured in the firing including police men. Kaithakkad Shafeeque, 18, son of Mustaffa Haji of Kaithakkad died in the police firing.
Police fire outbreak during a clash between IUML men and the police clashed near the moffussil bus stand during a rally organised by the IUML to accord a reception to party supremo Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal.
The trouble started when IUML activists pulled down banners and flags of the CPM and BJP, sources said. When BJP and CPM activists confronted the IUML men, tension mounted . The police burst tear gas shells to quell the mob. When this failed to silence them, the police resorted to firing.The IUML men attacked nearby houses and stoned shops.
Several vehicles, including two police jeeps, were overturned by the miscreants.Badiadka sub inspector Sibi Mathew was injured and as many as thirty policemen suffered injuries in the stone-throwing.
Another youth was stabbed to death near Karanthakkad on Sunday night in the wake of the clashes.
Mohammad Asgar, 21, a native of Arikkady, and his friends were stabbed. Asgar succumbed to his injuries while his friends Zainudeen, 26, and Muneer, 23, are admitted in hospital.
A prohibitory order has been clamped in Kasargod following the incident. The Opposition United Democratic Front has called a daylong hartal in Kasargod district on Monday to protest the police firing, sources said.
